Accreditation information
The DNAP program at Virginia Commonwealth University has been approved by the State Commission on Higher Education for Virginia (SCHEV) and the Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs (COA). Our program was awarded a 10-year accreditation in 2021.
- The Doctor of Nurse Anesthesia Practice (DNAP) and combined degree MSNA-DNAP were approved by the COA in June 2007.
- The entry to practice DNAP program was approved in June 2016.
- The VCU DNAP program is also a certified Level 3 IFNA program
First organized in 1969, the Department of Nurse Anesthesia in the College of Health Professions has a long and proud heritage of educating high-quality professional nurse anesthetists. In fact, the Department was the first program in the nation to offer the Master of Science in Nurse Anesthesia (MSNA) degree and the first in the nation to establish the Doctor of Nurse Anesthesia Practice (DNAP).

The rate of attrition for the December 2023 etpDNAP graduation class was 0%.
One hundred percent (100%) of the December 2023 etpDNAP graduates are employed as CRNAs within 6 months of graduation.
The first-time pass rate on the National Certification Examination for the December 2023 etpDNAP graduation class was 85.2%.
