Dr. Rebekah L. Carmel serves as Assistant Professor and Program Director for the Doctor of Nurse Anesthesia Practice program in the Department of Nurse Anesthesia at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU). She joined the department as full-time faculty in 2021, following more than a decade of dedicated involvement in nurse anesthesia education.

Dr. Carmel holds a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from York College of Pennsylvania, a Master of Science in Critical Care Nursing and a Doctor of Philosophy in Nursing from the University of Virginia, as well as a Master of Science in Nurse Anesthesia from VCU. She continues active clinical practice as an anesthetist at HCA Tricities Hospital.

Her research interests include Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS), non-operating room anesthesia, and point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS). Passionate about advancing clinical education, Dr. Carmel is committed to preparing nurse anesthesia learners to become safe, confident, and independent practitioners.

Outside of her professional pursuits, she enjoys spending time outdoors and cycling the Capital Rail to Trail.
